Next-Gen.biz a écrit:Nintendo Sued Over Controller Patent
By Kris Graft
[Update] A leading electronic interface company this week filed a suit against Nintendo in a Delaware court claiming that the Wii’s trigger-happy controller infringes on existing patents.
In a court filing snagged by gaming blog Kotaku, Camarillo, California-based Interlink Electronics accuses Nintendo of selling infringing products in the district of Delaware, where the company holds some of its operations.
Interlink’s “Trigger Operated Electronic Device” patent (no. 6,850,221), filed in September 1997 and issued February 1, 2005, describes an “ergonomically effective mouse for operating a computer.”
The patent also reads, “This invention relates to a trigger operated electronic device. In particular, it concerns a mouse for operating a cursor in a computer system.”
Of course, the Nintendo Wii has a trigger-operated controller which is also used as a pointing device. Diagrams from Interlink’s patent bear a passing resemblance to the Wii Remote.
There does seem to be a significant difference between Interlink’s patent and Nintendo’s design, however. Whereas Nintendo’s controller moves an on-screen cursor by moving the actual input device in 3D, Interlink’s patent describes a pointing mechanism that centers around a touch-sensitive pad and buttons, not the movement of the entire unit (“The multiple control elements are responsive to finger pressure to operate switch elements…”).
Still, the suit primarily takes issue with the trigger element that is shared between the two designs.
Interlink said that because of the alleged infringement, it has suffered damages including loss of royalties and reduced sales and profits. The company is seeking a restraining order against the sale of Nintendo’s controller as well as three times the assessed damages including interest. Reimbursement of legal fees is also being pursued.
A trial by jury has been demanded as well.
Requests for comment from Interlink and Nintendo had not been returned as of press time.
[Update] Nintendo has since contacted Next-Gen, stating "Nintendo doesn't comment on pending litigation." Interlink has yet to comment.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points):
Dr. Robotnik is stamping out music and fun in Mobius with his giant robotizing Mean Bean Steaming Machine. Before he turns all the citizens of Beanville into robots, players must save the day by gathering up beans in matching colors and defeating Robotnik's guards.
Alien Crush™ (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Alien Crush is a fan-favorite pinball game that features a sinister sci-fi theme. Play through a two-level playing field that comes to life with pulsating alien creatures. Rack up a high enough score, clear the board of these extraterrestrials and discover secret bonus stages.

The mortal enemy of the Nintendo Wii: Christmas trees?
While being able to sit down and play with a system for long, marathon sessions may be good for the initial review of a console, sometimes you just have to live with it for a while before odd problems and/or strengths pop out, such as the ability for the PS3 to read discs that the 360 has trouble with. I had some friends over last night to show them the Wii—they were intrigued by the bowling game they had read about—and it seemed like whenever the controller moved over to the right side of the screen it would crap out on us. It would start to blink, or randomly pop up somewhere else on the screen.
I turned the system off and on a few times, replaced the batteries in the Wiimote; nothing worked. It was getting annoying. The system I had talked up to friends and family as the one console that could get new people into gaming just looked... buggy. They said it looked like Nintendo still had some bugs to work out, and that's when I took a look around the room. What was causing this issue? Once I took in my living room, it became obvious. Remember when I talked about decorating the apartment a few posts ago?
Yeah, there was a big fat Christmas tree to the right of the television—with strands upon strands of white lights. You can see my problem, as well as my kicking game of Gunstar Heroes in the included visual aid.
I unplugged the tree, and suddenly everything was fine. While my living room didn't look quite as pretty, the Wii started working again instantly. I'm wondering if this is a problem we're going to hear about more often this holiday season as children open their Wiis on Christmas morning and have issues getting them to work properly. Turn off the tree, kids, and everything will be fine.
