Associated Press via CNN.com a écrit: Students break record by reading aloud for 6 straight days
POSTED: 10:54 p.m. EST, November 20, 2006
ROCHESTER, New York (AP) -- A team of high school seniors set a six-day reading record on Monday as a way to bolster students' interest in books and boost their school's spirit.
Southside High School's principal said he pursued the reading marathon to inspire a school still reeling from the 2001 arrest of a senior who had smuggled a duffel bag full of bombs and guns into the school intending to carry out a killing spree.
The teen, who was sentenced to more than eight years in prison, surrendered peacefully after students notified officials that he had passed someone a threatening note.
"That was just one of the shadows we've tried to overcome," said principal Christopher Krantz, who took over the school in 2004. "When I came here, the school was just kind of stumbling. It had been through eight principals in eight years. It had some negative press; it had lost pizazz."
When the clock struck 5 p.m. Monday, six National Honor Society members drew a standing ovation from hundreds of parents, teachers and classmates. Cheers also rang out 11 hours earlier, at 6 a.m., when they matched a Guinness World Record set in October 2005 by five Britons who read aloud continuously for 117 hours at the airport in Manchester, England.
In mostly one-hour shifts, they read more than 20 beloved children's books, including the six-volume Harry Potter series, seven "Goosebumps" thrillers and Katherine Paterson's "Bridge to Terabithia." They wrapped up their epic, 128-hour performance on the school auditorium stage with "Oh, the Places You'll Go," a Dr. Seuss classic.
Between their reading spells, the students played table tennis, cards and Scrabble or crawled into their tents onstage for little more than four hours of sleep at a time. A nurse or a doctor was on duty nearby at all hours.
One student developed laryngitis and had to cut back to reading for just 10 or 15 minutes at a time until her voice improved with the help of a humidifier and infusions of honey.
"For the last six days, reading has been the cool thing to do," the principal said. "I've had people say to me, 'You know what, we turned the TV off this weekend and read as a family. It was really inspirational to a lot of people."

When a Seizure Gets You Thrown in Jail
epilepsy
By JIM AVILA and LARA SETRAKIAN, ABC News Law & Justice Unit
Nov. 23, 2006 — Roughly 3 million Americans live with epilepsy. And a surprising number of them go to jail for it.
Why? Around the country, police officers and bystanders who see someone having a seizure mistake it for disorderly, criminal behavior.
That's what happened to Daniel Beloungea of Pontiac, Mich. On most days Daniel lives the normal life of a 48-year-old single man. But roughly once a week, he loses total control of his body and mind to an epileptic seizure.
A seizure took over Beloungea's body while walking through his suburban Detroit neighborhood last April. When an onlooker in a neighbor's house saw Beloungea having the seizure, which includes rapid repetitive arm motion, she misinterpreted it as criminal conduct. Specifically, she thought Beloungea was masturbating in public.
With that misconception in mind, she called the Oakland Police Department. When police arrived on the scene, Beloungea was still undergoing his seizure, acting disoriented and not responding to questions.
When officers couldn't get through to Beloungea they drew their weapons, shocked him with a high-voltage taser, hit him with a baton and wrestled him to the ground. They then handcuffed him and put him in a police car.
Undersheriff Michael McCabe of the Oakland County Police Department said that the officers tasered Beloungea because he lunged at one of them. Beloungea and his lawyer say the more police got physical the more Beloungea got agitated and aggressive — typical behavior, according to the Epilepsy Foundation of America, for a person restrained while having a partial complex seizure. Beloungea's wild motions and inability to communicate were not defiance or resistance, but classic symptoms of epilepsy
The officers put Beloungea in jail, citing assault of a police officer and resisting arrest. Throughout the incident Beloungea, was wearing a medical alert bracelet identifying him as an epileptic, stating his name and the contact numbers of people who can be reached in case of an emergency.
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Régis, a Thai Buddhist monk cut off his penis with a machete because he had an erection during meditation and declined to have it reattached, saying he had renounced all earthly cares, a doctor and a newspaper said on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old monk, whose name was withheld for privacy reasons, allowed medical staff at Maharaj hospital, 780 km (480 miles) south of Bangkok to dress his wound, but refused reattachment, hospital chief Prawing Euanontouch said.
"We cleaned up the wound, gave him some stitches, but he declined to have it reattached because he said had abandoned everything," Prawing told Reuters by telephone.
Prawing declined to comment on the monk's erection, which Bangkok-based Kom Chad Luk tabloid reported on its Web site.

Article from: AAP
A MELBOURNE teenager who killed a year 12 student by spearing him in the head with an umbrella was today found guilty of murder for the second time.
Christopher Williams, 18, died in hospital of a brain injury four days after the umbrella penetrated his skull following an argument at a suburban Essendon tram stop on October 21, 2003.
The teenager, who was 14 at the time of the incident, was found guilty last year of murdering Williams and sentenced to 14 years' jail with a minimum term of nine years.
He won a retrial in May after the Victorian Court of Appeal ruled the trial judge failed to adequately instruct the jury on the differences between reckless murder and manslaughter.
After about a day of deliberations the jury in the second trial today returned the guilty verdict against the teenager.
Family and friends of the victim broke out in cheers, clapped and hugged each other following the verdict.
The offender, who cannot be named for legal reasons as the offence took place when he was a juvenile, appeared shocked and covered his mouth.
He will be sentenced at a later date.

BERLIN, Germany (Reuters) -- A 21-year-old German tourist who wanted to visit his girlfriend in the Australian metropolis Sydney landed 13,000 kilometers (8,077 miles) away near Sidney, Montana, after mistyping his destination on a flight booking Web site.
Dressed for the Australian summer in T-shirt and shorts, Tobi Gutt left Germany on Saturday for a four-week holiday.
Instead of arriving "down under", Gutt found himself on a different continent and bound for the chilly state of Montana.
"I did wonder but I didn't want to say anything," Gutt told the Bild newspaper. "I thought to myself, you can fly to Australia via the United States."
Gutt's airline ticket routed him via the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon, to Billings, Montana. Only as he was about to board a commuter flight to Sidney -- an oil town of about 5,000 people -- did he realize his mistake.
The hapless tourist, who had only a thin jacket to keep out the winter cold, spent three days in Billings airport before he was able to buy a new ticket to Australia with 600 euros in cash that his parents and friends sent over from Germany.
"I didn't notice the mistake as my son is usually good with computers," his mother, Sabine, told Reuters.
