Ars Technica a écrit: Nintendo's new remote: How do Wii do it?

6/15/2006 2:41:43 PM, by Jeremy Reimer

The excitement over Nintendo's demonstration of the Wii's motion-sensitive controller at E3 almost overshadowed the public outcry over the console's new name. From watching Shigeru Miyamoto conduct a virtual symphony to seeing four people (including a lucky contest winner) play a quick pick-up game of doubles tennis, the potential for new and innovative game play from the Wiimote is nearly limitless.

People were so excited over this technology that, from all appearances, Sony decided to quickly jump on the bandwagon and add motion sensitivity to the PS3 controller, giving its poor Warhawk developers a mere 10 days to include the new functionality in time for E3. However, Sony's system handles only relative motion, such as tilt on the x, y, or z axis, and quick movements in each of these three dimensions. It works great for games like Warhawk (assuming the lag issues can be worked out) where you are basically just tilting around your jet fighter, but it cannot determine absolute positioning for games like Red Steel that use the Wiimote as a tool for pointing at things on the screen.

Now, in a new article, author Dean Takahashi wonders exactly why that is so. He argues that the Wii controller, which contains MEMS (micro electro-mechanical system) devices, can't simply keep track of motion without requiring the "control strip" placed in front of the player's television. The MEMS are used in devices like laptop hard drives to sense sudden excessive motion and park the hard disk drive heads so that there is no damage from the impact.

Takahashi wonders why the Wiimote can't simply use the results from the accelerometers to determine absolute position, after an initial calibration:

"The chip senses direction and acceleration by measuring changes in the electrons within it." [...] "Broadcom makes the wireless Bluetooth radio chip that transmits the positional data to the console in real time. All of the components are inexpensive and they are a lot faster than they used to be. That 19s how a big backhand stroke by the player gets translated into a virtual stroke in a tennis game. But if all that is in there, what do they need the optical sensor for. Can't they just calculate where the controller is pointing based on the XYZ data and motion data alone?"

The answer seems to be that the accuracy of the accelerometers is not good enough to maintain an absolute position without drift. A player might move the controller really rapidly to the right, then slowly back to its starting position, and a small error in the calculation of the acceleration would mean that the game would misinterpret the motion and think the controller is in a different spot. The Wii uses the three LEDs in the control strip to provide a central calibration point that eliminates this problem by recalibrating the controller's position every so often.

One drawback of this approach is that the Wii remote will only be well calibrated at a certain distance away from the control strip. This appears to be verified by reports from E3 that the controller will seem a little "off" if the player moves too close or far away from the strip. Left, right, up, and down motions are not affected by this, which is what makes the dramatic tennis strokes seen in the E3 demos possible. However, if the player were to get excited by a drop shot and run up close to the TV set, the sensors would be put off.

Until more people have a Wiimote in their hot little hands, it will be difficult to figure out the exact limitations of the system. However, from all reports it seems as if the controller does work as advertised, and that all the components (including the control strip) are necessary. This means that games on the Wii will not be easily ported to systems like the PlayStation 3.

GameDaily Biz a écrit:U.K. Court: PS2 Not a Computer

Looks like Sony Computer Entertainment is 0 for 2 in recent legal battles. First they lost their lawsuit with Immersion Corp. and now the company's fight to have the PS2 classified as a computer has failed. Sony was hoping to gain over $60M in refunds on EU import charges.

Recent comments from SCE president Ken Kutaragi suggest that Sony considers its upcoming PlayStation 3 to be a computer, not a console. The same can't be said for the PS2, however.

A U.K. court of appeals has ruled against Sony after a five-year legal battle to have the PS2 classified as a computer or "digital processing unit." While computers have always been exempt from EU import charges, video game consoles have not. Had the court actually ruled that the PS2 is a computer, Sony could have been granted a 50 million Euro (roughly $63 million) rebate on import duties.

Lord Justice Chadwick dismissed Sony's entire claim as a "skeleton argument."

He wrote, "In my view the skeleton argument filed in this Court on behalf of Sony goes beyond what can be regarded as acceptable written advocacy: it exceeds the bounds of propriety..."

"I am not here protesting about its inordinate length, nor about its discursive quality, nor about its frequent and unnecessary resort to hyperbole; although all those unappealing features are present. My concern is with the repeated aspersions that are cast in that document on the intellectual honesty of the High Court Judge from whose decision this appeal is brought," concluded Chadwick.

Interestingly, Kutaragi's latest insistence that the PS3 is a computer does not seem to stem from Sony wanting to avoid tariff payments when the next-gen system goes on sale. The European import tax on video game consoles was zero in 2004 and video game consoles are not subject to EU import charges currently.

gwn.com a écrit:Toys'R'Us in Australia are now taking pre-orders for the Wii at US$249, and that will include an unspecified free game! Could Nintendo be including Wii Sports as so many have speculated?

After contacting Toys'R'Us for comment, they have indeed confirmed that everyone will receive a free game with their Wii as part of the package, but they did not know which game this might be. To be sure, we called three different stores, and all said the same thing. Sounds to us like Nintendo might be planning to include Wii Sports, as many have speculated. It would make sense to include this game because it encapsulates what Wii is all about. Not only that, but it shows off how the Wiimote can be used in so many different ways.

Wii Sports is basically a bunch of smaller mini-games, some of which have origins as tech demos. The idea that Nintendo decided to collate these into the Wii Sports game and include them with the Wii therefore is not so hard to believe. At least we now know there will be a game included in the package (at least at Toys'R'Us!) - but the question remains, which one? Wii Sports definately makes the most sense as it is the "Warioware" of the launch line-up for the Wii. We'll be calling more retailers today and will report back with any further updates, so stay tuned!

IGN a écrit:Comic-Con 2006: LucasArts Comments on Wii
The makers of Star Wars and Indiana Jones confirm future Wii support.
by Mark Bozon

July 21, 2006 - In a Star Wars panel this afternoon at the San Diego Comic-Con, LucasArts representative Steve Sansweet confirmed that the company that would be working with all three next generation systems, most importantly for us, the Wii. During the Q&A session, a younger gamer took the microphone and asked if the company would be showing support for the newest motion-controlled Nintendo console. Sansweet's responded simply by stating the likeness between the Wii controller and a lightsaber, followed by a statement that LucasArts would be supporting every next generation system.

No word was given as to what possible titles could be on the way, and there was no further comment on the Wii. Nintendo fans were speculating that the somewhat "bad history" between LucasArts and the Big N could hurt the chances of a Star Wars or Indiana Jones Wii title, so the affirmation of total next gen. support is great news. More as it develops.

IGN a écrit:Miyamoto Shares Wii Secrets
The origins of the nunchuck, Miyamoto's Wii games, and more.
by Anoop Gantayat

July 21, 2006 - Nintendo game master Shigeru Miyamoto, speaking with Japan's monthly Nintendo Dream as part of the magazine's 10th anniversary festivities, has shared a few intriguing details on the Wii, its controller, and his upcoming games.

Miyamoto first spoke about the origins of the system. "It was very important to have it become 'something that would be best to have there,'" he said, speaking of Nintendo's desire to make the Wii an attractive machine for households. Miyamoto feels that game machines had the status of a desirable household item at one point, but they lost it. The change happened when games "lost their fundamental nature as pure entertainment."

Wii development started with thoughts of "what kind of machine would make for a console that one wants to keep in the home?" The answer was something that doesn't get in the way, something "not frightening." The Wii project also began with the notion of making something "anyone can play, simply using one hand."

Of course, every Wii includes, in addition to the Wii-mote, the nunchuck accessory. Miyamoto explained the origins of the secondary device and its name. When Nintendo first made demo units, the development staff referred to the device as a nunchuck simply because it looked like one. American staffers referred to the device as nunchuck as well, so it became a development code for the device. Eventually, Nintendo investigated the copyright status of the term "nunchuck," learned that it was free to use as a standard word, and went with it.

Nunchuck isn't the precise name for the analog expansion unit that will ship with every Wii, though. Anything that's attached to the Wii-mote in similar fashion to the analog expansion unit is said to be in a nunchuck style position. Anything that's fixed to the remote similar to the gun expansion that was shown at E3 is said to be in zapper style position.

Earlier in development, the Wii-mote was referred to as the "Core Unit." The devices that attached to it were referred to as the "Peripheral Unit." This naming originated when Nintendo came up with the idea of splitting the controller into separate units. The biggest cost to the controller comes from wireless functionality and power consumption. Nintendo realized that by placing these costly capabilities into one device, the Core Unit, they would then be able to make and release a variety of Peripheral Units at cheaper cost to users.

Miyamoto also touched upon one of the last areas of the controller's functionality, its speaker. "We had a lengthy discussion on the matter," said Miyamoto about the decision to include either a speaker or a microphone in the controller.

There was apparently even some consideration of including neither in order to keep the controller from becoming too complicated, but this was vetoed. "Because you're using a wireless, rod-shaped remote control to play, it's important to have feedback and reaction to the actions that you take," said Miyamoto. "Controllers until now have used rumble, but we felt that rumble would be insufficient, and ended up keeping the speaker in."

He let out one bit of information, confirming first if it was okay to reveal it. Nintendo is making a game in which four players play together by passing a single controller around. The controller calls out player names in order to indicate whose turn it is.

He also suggested another idea, a game where the controller quietly gives out secret information to individual players as their turn comes about.

One of the main driving forces for the inclusion of the speaker was third parties. Nintendo actually considered removing the device for cost reasons, but found third parties requesting that it be left in.

Interest wasn't as high inside Nintendo from the start. "When we first started talking about the speaker, there was absolutely no reaction," revealed Miyamoto. This changed when people heard the sound effects generated by the speaker while swinging a sword in Zelda and noted that it sounded like swinging a Light Saber.

Asked about reactions from E3 which claimed it difficult to go back to using a standard controller after having used the Wii controller, Miyamoto said, "That's because once you've gotten used to free style using the remote control, going back to a controller where you use both hands, you're unable to move your hands and end up feeling a lack of freedom. However, I have absolutely no intention of being negative about current controllers. We are, after all, preparing a standard style controller in the form of the Classic Controller."

Miyamoto feels that some games will actually work better with the classic controller. He mentioned F-Zero as one such game.

The dialogue turned at one point to, of all things, left-handed and right-handed gaming. Miyamoto is left-handed, and he said that he's recently been trying to get used to using the remote/nunchuck pair in the "reverse" way -- that is, the remote in the left and the nunchuck in the right hand. While he's been getting used to playing like this, he feels lefties who've grown accustomed to playing games the current way will have an easier time of playing Wii games like everyone else.

In practice, regardless of game, you'll be able to play with either device in either hand. Miyamoto actually expects kids who've never played a game before to hold the remote in their left hand and the nunchuck in their right hand.

One of Nintendo Dream's closing questions for this interview asked Miyamoto to list the games in whose development he's directly involved. "Wii is the main [platform]," he said, "and I'm working on a number of titles, but there are some that have yet to be announced so I can't give an exact number." Pausing to think for a bit, he concluded that he's working on "a lot of games." "Of the games that have been announced, I'm working fully on Zelda, and also working on Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports. I'm also working on the product that was referred to as 'Remote Pointer Demo' at E3."

Wii's MASSIVE Launch Lineup: 27 Titles
Thursday, 10 August 2006

With the Wii launch hiding somewhere in the next 3 months, we can't help but to brim with excitement while thinking about what we'll be playing on Wii-day (which is our favorite term for the day the Wii launches). If your worried about the Wii suffering from the lackluster launch day the DS did, you can put all those fears to rest.
We went back to count just how many games had been confirmed for the Wii so far, and were wonderfully surprised to find 27 confirmed launch titles coming to the Wii. Can you say 'biggest game console launch in history'? This isn't a little collection of obscure third-party games nor two-thirds of sports titles either, we're talking a list with some serious big-hitters. Metroid Prime 3, Zelda, and Red Steel top a list of widely diverse and interesting titles.

Some quick comparisons. The Xbox 360 launched last year with 18 games in the US, although only a handfull were exclusive, and 11 of them were sports games. The Wii counters with it's games spanning numerous genres (maybe even inventing some new ones) and over 20 exclusive titles. The PS3 is currently sitting at 15 confirmed games on it's November 17th launch day. Of course, this is expected to increase in the next few months. That said, the current Wii launch list (which you can see below) is far from final, and we wouldn't say it's a stretch to expect to see at least 30 games on launch day. If that doesn't get you excited about the Wii, you have no soul.

One last note of interest. Worried about that post-launch drought? Well, if we don't see 'em at launch, remember Super Mario Galaxy, WarioWare, Fire Emblem, Prince of Persia, Sonic, and of course Super Smash Bros. Brawl aren't very far behind.

[quote]Insiders claim to have seen final hardware. The Broadway CPU is allegedly in the 750 CL line, a continuation of the 750 GX series. IBM may be working on a revised Broadway chip with a lower clock speed for a future Nintendo handheld -- one that presumably plays GameCube discs.[quote]

PS3: 120 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pl ... on_3_games
360: 214 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_360_games
Wii: 151 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_games
