RML and Chevrolet had a successful first test with the new 2006 Chevrolet Lacetti car at Brands Hatch today. In freezing temperatures and through showers of rain, sleet and snow, the team managed to gather valuable data from drivers Alain Menu and Nicola Larini. Rob Huff – who shook down the very first 2006-spec at Millbrook two weeks ago – will be in action tomorrow, Wednesday.
Despite the changing weather conditions, both Menu and Larini were happy with their first runs in the car, which now features left-hand drive and revised aerodynamics.
“It’s a pity the weather kept changing like it did,” Menu said. “I managed to get in just three or four laps in the dry, so we mainly concentrated on finalizing the oil cooler position for the remainder of the day. The feeling of the car in general is good and the left-hand drive is definitely an improvement.”
RML Chief Executive, Ray Mallock, was pleased with the tests, despite the weather: “We just had a minor teething problem with the power steering system before lunch, but the engineers sorted that out for the afternoon session. Apart from that we had no major issues, so we could quickly start amassing data. Unfortunately we were only using a portion of the track (the short Indy Circuit) for this test, as the Grand Prix track can only be used for race meetings due to restrictions on the number of “noisy” days. But all in all we can say that we’ve had a very productive day indeed.”
After this week’s test in Brands Hatch, testing will continue in Albacete, Spain next week and Magny Cours, France the following week.

Audi brings Timo Scheider back to DTM
Audi brings Timo Scheider back to DTM: The young German, who missed winning the FIA GT Championship title by a single point last year, drives an Audi A4 DTM in the 2006 season.
Although the new Audi works driver is only 27-years old he is one of the most experienced DTM drivers: Timo Scheider was one of the major DTM players between 2000 and 2004, before making a brief excursion in a sportscar cockpit last year. Furthermore, Timo Scheider competed for the German national team in the new A1 Grand Prix racing series.
Timo Scheider started his career in karting in 1989, was runner-up in the German Formula 3 Championship in 1997 and swapped to the DTM in 2000. He narrowly missed winning his first DTM race in 2003 at Zandvoort, when, after starting from pole position and holding a comfortable lead, he lost a wheel. In the same year Scheider won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring (Germany) and in 2005 the 24-hour race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) at the wheel of a GT1 sportscar.
Despite his successful foray in the FIA GT Championship he kept in contact with the DTM scene. "It was always my goal to return to the DTM, which is the world’s best racing series alongside Formula 1,” says Scheider. "I’m extremely pleased to have succeeded in doing so with Audi. I’ve always admired Audi. In 2005 I got behind the wheel of the Audi race taxi at the Norisring – it was the best DTM car that I ever drove. Since then it was perfectly clear to me that I wanted to join Audi.”
Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich is convinced that Scheider is a good choice: "Timo has shown that he is one of the fastest in a DTM car. He brings five years of DTM experience with him to Audi. He is also an intelligent and stylish guy who fits perfectly to the Audi brand.”
Timo Scheider was born on 10 November 1978 in Lahnstein and lives with his fiancé Jasmin and son Loris in Altach, Austria.

Audi DTM squad is almost complete
The AUDI AG squad for the 2006 DTM is almost complete. Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline receives support from two new Audi factory teams in its efforts to retrieve the most popular international touring car racing series championship title back from Mercedes-Benz: Audi Sport Team Phoenix and Audi Sport Team Rosberg each enter two Audi A4 DTM cars. As before Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline fields four cars. Two privately entered A4 DTM cars run by the new Dr Colin Kolles managed customer team complete the squad.
Driving for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline are three proven racers, former champion Mattias Ekström (S), Le Mans record winner Tom Kristensen (DK) and Martin Tomczyk (D) who all competed for the Bavarian team over the last couple of years. The fourth cockpit is still open. All four drivers get a newly built car for the 2006 season.
Audi Sport Team Phoenix enters two A4 DTM cars from last year for Christian Abt (D) and Pierre Kaffer (D). The team from the Eifel region is no unknown quantity for Audi Sport: In 1999 the team lead by Ernst Moser, which has its headquarters a stones throw form the Nürburgring, entered two Audi A4 quattros in the German Super Touring Championship (STW). Phoenix has been competing in the DTM since 2000.
New to the Audi family is the DTM experienced team of former Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg, whose son Nico makes his Formula 1 debut this year. Audi Sport Team Rosberg also fields a brace of year-old cars, which will be driven by Frank Stippler (D) and newcomer Timo Scheider (D).
"All drivers have proven just how quick they can be in a DTM car, and each of them has at least one DTM season behind them,” explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich. "The past has shown that specific DTM experience is of particular importance in this hard fought racing series. This is also the case for our two new teams who must familiarise themselves with the Audi A4 DTM at first but not the DTM. They will form a strong combination together with our proven team Abt Sportsline.”
Audi Sport Team Joest, which competed for Audi in the DTM over the past two seasons, will concentrate entirely on the new Audi R10 sportscar project during the 2006 season. "The goal of becoming the first automobile manufacturer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a diesel engine is very ambitious,” says Dr Ullrich. "Our test and development programme till Le Mans is so intensive that it doesn’t allow a parallel programme in the DTM.”
Two of the Audi A4 DTM cars which were entered by the Joest team last year have been acquired by the team run by Dr Colin Kolles. Audi supports the programme with its new works driver Vanina Ickx (B), who will drive one of the two cars originating from the 2004 season. A second driver has not been nominated by Dr Kolles yet.
The three Audi factory teams and the customer squad will be in action at the official DTM test at Vallelunga (Italy) in the forthcoming week. Further tests are planned from 20 to 23 March at Brands Hatch (Great Britain). The DTM will be unveiled to the public on 26 March in Düsseldorf (Germany).
The opening race of the DTM season is on 9 April at Hockenheim (Germany), where Saturday’s qualifying will be run for the first time in accordance with the new "Shoot-out” rules, which promises even more excitement. German TV ‘Das Erste’ broadcasts qualifying and the races live from all ten DTM 2006 events.
